This song may technically be about the Great Gatsby, but I definitely had a particular real life girl in mind when I wrote it. I think I may have told her at some point that this song is actually for her (possibly while drunk), but to this day, I think I'd still be too embarrassed to actually tell her, since she ended up being a very good friend of mine.
The Great Gatsby was a huge inspiration for this whole album. In particular I related so strongly to the character of Gatsby, and the romantic escapism with darker undertones present throughout the story really influenced a lot of my songwriting during this time.
lyrics
Tonight tonight
There's a wistful breeze in the air tonight
Coming in over the Sound
And I hope you can hear it too
Rattling your windows baby
Telling you to come on out
Cause I feel like I've been waiting for you most of my life
It's not hard to find me
Just follow the lights
I'd go looking for you Daisy but baby that just ain't right
So come out, come out to the party tonight
It's always for you but you never arrive
So I'll keep everyone swingin' through till dawn
Until you show up with that red dress on
Oh Daisy
I've been waiting so long
And there's a burning in my heart tonight
And this fire it never died
I just wanna see those sad sad eyes just one more time
Because I feel like I've been waiting for you most of my life
It's not hard to find me
Just follow the lights
I'd go looking for you Daisy but baby that just ain't right
So come out, come out to the party tonight
It's always for you but you never arrive
So I'll keep everyone swingin' through till dawn
Until you show up with that red dress on
Oh Daisy
I've been waiting so long
And I used to stand
With my legs quivering
The sand on the beach shaking under my feet
My arms outstretched to the silvery stars
But not anymore
No not anymore
No more no more no no no more
No not anymore
And I've been acquainted with the liars and the cheaters and thieves
And I've talked with all the donnas and the stars and the queens
Just trying to find that diamond among the ashes
Come on Daisy it was only a crime
But you left me all alone
And I still hope that you will come back home
And go out go out to the party tonight
It's always for you but you never arrive
So I'll keep everyone swingin' through till dawn
Until you show up with that red dress on
Oh Daisy
But you never came out came out to the parties those nights
They were always for you but you never arrived
So now I've got nothing better to do
Until you show up
With that red dress on
Come on Daisy
I've been waiting so long
