"We're gonna have our place in the night time sky"
On Elston Street in Bloomfield NJ, where I grew up, I lived two houses away from who I would consider to be my best friend. From our teenage years, all the way up until we finally moved out of our parents' houses, we would always walk all around the neighborhood, talking about pretty much anything and everything: Problems at home, girls, music, our hopes for the future, whatever. Sometimes some other friends would join us too, and sometimes we'd run into some odd characters while wandering around.
These were some of my best memories growing up, and this song is basically a tribute to those times, friends, and how a lot of my anxieties would be alleviated after the nightly walks, and I'd feel like I was capable of making it through the next day.
lyrics
Wandering the streets at night
In the surreal glow of the pale moonlight
Like phantoms
They're here and then they're gone
They roam every block of these dark roads
Keeping watch
And just talking about how to save the world
Yeah the Jersey Knights are out tonight
Just like the last and all the nights past
If you listen
You can almost hear their voices on the wind
You can hear their footsteps move with the rhythm of the night
You can catch a glimpse as they move
Beneath the streetlights
They're just trying to find their way through the dark
Trying to find a way
To get their place in the stars
Yeah the Jersey Knights are out to fight
And I think I saw them talking
To another wanderer in the night
She said
"Have you ever been to hell and back?
Well I know someone who has."
And the knights said
No we're just normal men
We live our lives and do the best that we can
To save the world
To save our souls
It's easier to think in the dead of the night
That's when we can get our thoughts just right
Someday we're gonna live like kings
Gonna live in a castle and never worry about a thing
We're gonna have our place in the night time sky
But 'til then
We're just gonna try
Try to get by
Yeah the Jersey Knights are out again
Just trying to save the world
