"Doctors and lawyers, barons of industry, everything I'll never be"
Upper Mountain Avenue is a street in Montclair NJ, basically on the top of a big hill, that consists almost entirely of huge unattainable looking mansions and houses. It's an area a couple minutes away from the street where I grew up, and everyone would always say how various celebrities and famous athletes lived somewhere in the vicinity of this street.
At the bottom of that same hill is the neighborhood where I grew up in Bloomfield. It truly seemed like the upper class, and the middle and lower class were separated by their elevation on this hill, and I always would try to wonder how the people living in those mansions ended up there. Did they inherit the property? Or maybe they got wealthy on their own and ended up buying one of those houses.
lyrics
Cruising down Upper Mountain Ave.
Saw everything that I'll never have
Big mansions sitting on top of the hill
Can't even get within
Throwing distance
Of those big windows glaring down
Taking away every ounce of my will
Sometimes I gotta wonder who's inside
Doctors and lawyers, barons of industry
Everything I'll never be
And I thought to myself
If I could just catch a little break
Maybe I could find out what it's like
To not be stuck
Down here with the rest of us
And I could still remember the words that Janie said
Spinning round in my head
She said, she'd like a doctor or lawyer of her own
Maybe spend the rest of her days on a throne
In a tower
Never leave, never dream
For everything would come with ease
Sometimes I gotta wonder if it's really better
To trade your soul for security
Well it damn well better be
And I said
If you'd just let me pull you down
From those columns you'd see
It's still a pretty good time
Down here with the rest of us
